Position Summary
At Stony Brook Medicine the Revenue Specialist will provide operational support within the hospital's Patient Accounting Department. The position will support day-to-day business functions including but not limited to: billing, appeals, follow-up, financial assistance and customer service. Candidates must possess prior health care revenue cycle or medical billing and/or follow-up experience for an acute care hospital.

Duties of a Revenue Specialist may include the following but are not limited to:
- Prepare and submit hospital claims including adjustment, void. Review denials, coding issue, audits.
- Follow-up on rejected or denied claim, improper payments and coding issues. Process appeals.
- Liaise with third party billing and collection agencies.
- Identify issues and patterns with claims/insurance companies and review to increase revenue and prevent unnecessary denials.
- Assist the supervisor in scheduling, time sheet, leave requests, performance programs and evaluations.
- Assist the supervisor in training and make recommendation to improve policy and procedures for the unit as well as the office.
- Complete variance and trend analyses via spreadsheets, databases and dashboards.
- Investigate and accurately update COB, including refund request letters, reports, mail, etc.
Qualifications
Required
- Associates Degree in Health Information Management, Health Administration, Finance, Accounting, Computer Science or related field and at least 2 years health care revenue cycle or medical billing experience or in lieu of a degree at least 5 years of health care revenue cycle/billing experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office product.
Experience in a least one of the following areas:
- In depth knowledge and experience with investigating, reviewing and following-up rejected/denied inpatient and outpatient hospital insurance claims.
- Knowledge of hospital billing with experience using a claims scrubber system.
Preferred :
- B.S. Accounting/Finance, Health Information Management, Health Administration, Finance, Accounting, Computer Science or related field.
- Experience with Inpatient and Outpatient billing requirements (UB-04) and CMS Medicare and New York Medicaid reimbursement methodologies.
- Knowledge of third party payer reimbursement and managed care contract.
- Experience investigating, reviewing and following-up rejected/denied inpatient and outpatient hospital claims.
- Knowledge of CPT, HCPCs and ICD-10 coding principles.
- Experience with Cerner Invision or Cerner Millennuim Patient Accounting.
- Experience in Insurance Verification and updating.
- Experience working in Medicare FSS DDE.

- Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from Stony Brook Medicine's Employee Health Services*
- Complete electronic reference check with a minimum of three (3) professional references.
- Successfully complete a 5 panel drug screen*
- Successfully complete a Background Check investigation.
- Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
